Marianne M – Roll 1

Indisposable Concept gallery featuring Marianne M. Shot with a Disposable Camera.

Age: N/A
Where: Bangkok
When: April, 2016

My name is Marianne Marquez, I’m from the Philippines. I travel around Asia as a model and I started my own mini project of taking pictures of everyday life in Bangkok, and of my friends. My interest in using film/disposable cameras started when I first bought one in Tokyo. I decided to use one for every trip I go to. Soon enough, I discovered that one is not enough. With each place, I like buying unique post cards but I thought, what could be more unique than making your own and sending it out to your loved ones instead? I hope you enjoy my photos of the family and friends I’ve made in my favorite trip thus far.

Q+A

1.) How did you find the experience of using the disposable camera? Enjoyable or painful?
It was a thrill! I’ve always been intimidated with using professional cameras or digital cameras. All the functions I have to consider setting up seemed daunting. Having a disposable camera has none of that feel. It’s more user-friendly.

2.) How did it make you feel not being able to see the photos as they were taken and not being able to edit or know what the photos turned out like?
It made me excited for the mystery that’s about to unfold once the film gets developed. Some days, I have to really think about the shot I want to take. It has to be worth it since I only get limited shots in one roll of film. Other days, I have to not think and just shoot. Some moments are more beautiful when taken candidly.

3.) From your roll of film what was your fave image and why?
My favorite shot would have to be the photo of my friends Elijah and Samantha walking in the streets of Bangkok. We all come from different parts of the world, met here and found a family in each other. I think I was able to capture one of the beautiful moments of them showing affection to each other.

4.) Would you be interested in shooting another roll?
Definitely. I have 3 more disposable cameras waiting to start and adventure.

5.) Is there anything else we could include or introduce to make the experience more interesting?
We all come from different parts of the world, different background and yet we always find something that will tie us together forever. It could even start with a single photo.

6.) Did you enjoy the aspect of shooting a selfie?
Posing for a shoot as part of my job (model) is different from shooting something personal. I’m rather shy in taking selfies. Making silly faces is my way of being comfortable and my way of showing that we should always try to have fun.

7.) What did you think of the outcomes when you saw the final photos?
Delighted! I love the imperfections of the images. They add so much character to them.

8.) Would you approach the concept differently if you had another go?
No, I’d like to continue capturing moments of my friends in their natural state. I love seeing their beauty as it is. The only thing I would change — more rolls/cameras in stock.

9.) Would you enter into the concept if it was set up in a competition format with prizes to be won?
I would but it’s not a priority. I’m doing it out of fun, sharing and creating beautiful memories.

10.) Would you like to see your photos presented in a gallery exhibition environment.
I’m not confident with my shots but it will be a pleasant surprise if it’s considered.
