Kurt A – Roll 1

Indisposable Concept gallery featuring Kurt A. Shot with a Disposable Camera.

Age: N/A
Where: Kwasitchewan Falls trail, Manitoba, Canada. It is a 22km hiking trail, just south of Thompson Manitoba.
When: March, 2016

This was the first time experimenting with double exposures with disposable cameras. It turned out to be my most completed roll and my most memorable. It has provided me with a new gateway into another technique of creative expression through film.

Q+A

1.) How did you find the experience of using the disposable camera? Enjoyable or painful?
The reason I started using disposable cameras was because I did not have the ability to invest in parts that would make my film SLR usable again. I did some research online that it was possible to do double exposures with disposable cameras. This roll is one of two rolls at my first attempt. It is probably my most completed roll using this technique. I found the experience very enjoyable. It is quick and easy like an automatic point and shoot, but still has the variability and uncertainty of shooting with film.

2.) How did it make you feel not being able to see the photos as they were taken and not being able to edit or know what the photos turned out like?
Doing this roll was definitely a gamble with trying not to overexpose the images and still trying to create interesting compositions. Not being able to see the images was part of the interest factor. As you can see, some of the images are out of focus or washed-out. Not being able to edit the images was not an issue with me, as the variability of film was one of the reasons I started to experiment with disposable cameras. I was very surprised that 25 distinguishable images were successfully developed from the roll.

3.) From your roll of film what was your fave image and why?
My favourite image would have to be 21410025. It successfully shows both an inside environment and an outside along with the passage of time between the two. The clean lines of the window blinds and the orange sunrise are juxtaposed by the organic shape of the tree and blue sky. At the same time, the two images seem to flow seamlessly with eachother.  The first image taken is of Thompson’s Sunrise looking through my cousin’s apartment window. The second image was taken several hours later along the Kwasitchewan Falls hike.

4.) Would you be interested in shooting another roll?
I am interested in shooting more! I have done several more double exposures since this roll. Some are successful, others only have one or two great images. I will continue to do so.

5.) Is there anything else we could include or introduce to make the experience more interesting?
Physical publication every so often would be incredible, through costs and logistics of such a step would have to be considered.

6.) Did you enjoy the aspect of shooting a selfie?
I am not a huge fan of taking selfies for my own personal reasons, but I did enjoy playing with scale and composition of a selfie with a secondary image.

7.) What did you think of the outcomes when you saw the final photos?
I was really blown away, as I thought I would have ruined the film. Considering this was my first attempt I am very impressed by how they turned out.

8.) Would you approach the concept differently if you had another go?
Yes and no. I am still very much in the experimental phase of double exposed disposables. Over the rolls since, I have gotten a better understanding of the technique and have developed some ideas I would like to try out and perfect

9.) Would you enter into the concept if it was set up in a competition format with prizes to be won?
Not really. The reason why I entered was to connect to people who saw the validity and potential of disposable cameras. I was very excited when I discovered the Indisposable Concept, and I quickly tried to find a previous roll that met the requirements. That being said, entering a competition would have the added bonus of winning a prize. A competition may provide encouragement to further experiment new techniques and ideas. Winning would definitely be great, but I think connecting with similar minds across the globe is my main purpose.

10.) Would you like to see your photos presented in a gallery exhibition environment.
I like to thank the Indisposable Concept group for running and promoting such a community and connecting people throughout the world. I cannot wait to see this project grow more in the future.  To the people who enjoyed viewing this role and would like to see more, you can follow me on instagram; @kurtis.andrew.
