Q+A with Holly C
1.) How did you find the experience of using the disposable camera? Enjoyable or painful?
Very enjoyable. I loved having the option of snapping off a shot of any moment I choose. I had to remind myself to use the disposable camera a few times since I tend to take so many photos with my iPhone too.
2.) How did it make you feel not being able to see the photos as they were taken and not being able to edit or know what the photos turned out like?
I used to always carry one of these around in my bag all the time, so the idea of playing with a “snappy”, or the ultimate party cam, is not new to me. Am I showing my age? One of my greatest losses was having my bag stolen on Zanzibar Island. I was more upset about losing the disposable camera than having to replace my passport!
3.) From your roll of film what was your fave image and why?
Jamaica: My favorite image is number 2, my view of the ocean. Just looking at this image relaxes me and it encompasses the feeling of this vacation, this moment on my 40th birthday, and it’s one I want to live again and again. My next favorite is number 1! I can’t remember the last time my husband and I took a disposable selfie! We used to do this all the time on our first travels.
Lake George: Probably number 12 and number 7 because these are views I’ve been looking at for most of my life and I have a lot of memories over the past 30 years from both of these vistas. And holy moly number 20! I still can’t believe we came upon a rattlesnake!
4.) Would you be interested in shooting another roll?
I did! And I’m sure I’ll be shooting more for sure. In fact I have 3 more disposable cameras waiting for some love.
5.) Is there anything else we could include or introduce to make the experience more interesting?
Nope! I think it’s fun to see how each person approaches the project in his/her own way.
6.) Did you enjoy the aspect of shooting a selfie
?
I love the selfie! It’s a great way to introduce ourselves to each other especially when we get unexpected outcomes.
7.) What did you think of the outcomes when you saw the final photos?
For the most part I was very happy with my results. This camera has been riding around in the back of my car as part of an “emergency accident” kit for the past 8+ years (clearly before cameras on cell phones were the norm). I had no idea what to expect. In the bright light of day, I had great results. While using the flash during daylight, or on cloudier days, the images were very washed out. And I had a few accidental snapoffs occur. Ooops.
8.) Would you approach the concept differently if you had another go?
I did with my second camera. I was very conscious of how many shots I had per day and tried to make sure I documented everything I wanted to remember during the week. I think when I do my next one, I’ll think out a theme or message I want to share with the world and hope sychronicity brings that message into my view many times over 7 days. Oh, and I’d be a lot more conscious of getting my horizons straight!
9.) Would you enter into the concept if it was set up in a competition format with prizes to be won?
Yes!
10.) Would you like to see your photos presented in a gallery exhibition environment.
Yes!
11. Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
I’m thrilled to be a part of the project and love checking out the galleries.
