Q+A with Phil

1.) How did you find the experience of using the disposable camera? Enjoyable or painful?
A little out of column A, and column B! I guess I had become accustomed to taking like 7 photos, choosing the best one, and then maybe cropping and/or adding a filter. It was interesting to step back a couple of decades and simply point and shoot, and hope for the best!

2.) How did it make you feel not being able to see the photos as they were taken and not being able to edit or know what the photos turned out like?
It made me anxious! Especially the selfie haha. But I’m pretty happy with how they all turned out!

3.) From your roll of film what was your fave image and why?
I think my fave is one I shot down at Mermaid Beach on Australia Day long weekend. Was also the 3rd day straight of torrential rain and 100km/h winds. For me this shot reminds me of just how intense it was down at the beach that day.

4.) Would you be interested in shooting another roll?
Yeah for sure! I’m heading to NYC in June I’d love to take one over!

5.) Is there anything else we could include or introduce to make the experience more interesting?
If you had an online store, there could be an opportunity for me to buy some of my pictures as prints, or postcards etc. It could be hard as the disposable camera photos aren’t usually of the highest quality.

6.) Did you enjoy the aspect of shooting a selfie?
I think it’s essential for this project, to put a face to a name. I did struggle though as I’m not a big selfie taker usually. I tried to mix it up by sticking a speech bubble to the wall behind me. But the freaked out a bit and gave the image this weird print over it

7.) What did you think of the outcomes when you saw the final photos?
I thought they were grainy and had this sort of raw aspect to them. I also thought “man the framing is all out”. I found that what you see through the viewfinder, isn’t always what got shit in the final image..

8.) Would you approach the concept differently if you had another go?
Not really, it’s still shooting the things around you, I maybe wouldn’t try as hard to get the pictures perfect, because hardly any of them ever come out perfect.

9.) Would you enter into the concept if it was set up in a competition format with prizes to be won?
Yeah I guess so. I mean if I had to pay a fee to enter I’m not sure if I would, I’m not a skilled photographer or anything. I’d give it a crack.

10.) Would you like to see your photos presented in a gallery exhibition environment.
If you wanted to I’d give you permission sure. I don’t really see the photos as my property. However if you sold my selfie for $100k I’d want a cut 😉

11.) Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Just wanted to say thankyou for the opportunity. I think it’s a great concept, and I had heaps of fun.
