Meet Jordan Barnes

We call it the #ICMEETSERIES and thought it would be interesting to find out a bit more about the people behind the disposables. We asked a few IC contributors to tell us a bit about themselves and this is what we got in return…

Who are you?
Hello World! My name is Jordan Barnes. I am a 24-year-old stylist/photographer currently living in Portland OR.

Where’s home?
I grew up in Southern California, I’m a Cali boy at heart.

What do you do for a crust?
I currently work for Solestruck.com! Solestruck is a website based international designer shoe retailer with headquarters in Tigard OR. We have a showroom in Portland I manage.

Can you tell us about your creative background?
I’ve pretty much always been a daydremer. You know, the kid with ADD who scribbled all over their homework and was more than a handful. That’s me! lol. I am obsessed with capturing moments and creating stories through photograhpy. I think a person’s clothing says so much about who they are inside. So I have this ongoing series called “Dressed & Captured” where I scout people I am inspired by to dress and then capture on film. I hope to have a show here in Portland this Summer.

What inspires you to shoot film?
The fact that film is something that is pysical- You hold it in your hand, you load your camera, ( Or wind your disposable!) you shoot the photo and then have to wait to see what you get. That excites me! It makes me appreciate & cherish those images so much more. It’s also a learning process! Each time I shoot I note what worked and what didn’t, etc..

How did you come to connect with Indisposable Concept?
Oh man, I do not rememebr the first time I found you! I think you found me! Through like a hastag. I just recall instantly having a “Fuck Yeah!” moment and sumbmitting some work. I am so pleased with what you are doing and the community that makes up this project as a whole.

Do you remember what was in the first roll of film you shot for IC?
I think it was made up of images from a road trip? Portland -Seattle and a few places in between.

What is your fav photo that you’ve shot for IC? Tell us a bit about it.
You guys posted one of my favorite photos that was of my friend Amanda Otto in a field of Sprinkles! It was on a 105 degree day in Portland! We were running around the city and snapping images when we stumbled into a high school soccar field with the sprinklers going! We ran through them and were so happy! It felt like we were Childeren again. A simple moment, but I think of it awlays. I am tragically romantic!

It seems film photography and disposables are making a comeback, why do you think that is?
I’d have to say it’s because in an age of all things instnt and digital people are seeking somethig..real.

If someone destroyed all the disposable cameras in the world and you had the very last one, what would you capture?
Editorial images in my favorite places during my favorite hours- Right before the sun rises and right before it sets/ a portrait of my boyfried/ one of myself/ my cat, Seymour/ and one depicting a message about how fucking upset I am some asshole ruined disposable photography!

What does 2016 hold for you?
This is my hustle year! I hope to have a show, shoot as much as possible, collaborate, and travel!

Explain your style/approach when shooting a roll.
I capture things, places, people, and scenarios that inspire me! That’s pretty much it! I am keen on shooting said categories in the way I see them so I can share my view with others. Eventually we all die- I want people long after I’m gone to see what I saw.

How would you describe your photographic style?
Editorialized, romantic depictions of everyday life.

Who or what influences you creatively?
Juergen Teller, Bruce Weber, Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorp & Ryan McGinley.

Where do you find inspiration?
I am keen on Mucsicians, individual style, unconventional beauty, and nature.

Fave place to shoot?
Bedrooms during the golden hour.
